Inherited from Sanskrit *धूमान्ध (dhūmāndha, “dim-sighted”), from धूम (dhūma, “smoke, mist”) + अन्ध (andha, “blind”) (compare attested धूमाक्ष (dhūmākṣa, “dim-eyed”)). Compare Punjabi ਧੁੰਦਲਾ (dhundlā) and Gujarati ધૂંધળું (dhū̃dhaḷũ).
