Inherited from Sanskrit *ज्ञात्र (jñātra), from जन् (jan, “to beget”, root). Cognate with Punjabi ਨਾਤਾ (nāttā), Sindhi ناتو / नातो, Gujarati નાતો (nāto), Marathi नाते (nāte).
