Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀢𑁆𑀢 (patta) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-illa-) + -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit पात्र (pātra, drinking-vessel).[1] Cognate with Bengali পাতিল (patil).
