Borrowed from Portuguese padre, from Old Galician-Portuguese padre (father), from Latin pater, patrem (father), from Proto-Italic *patēr, from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr (father). Cognate with Konkani पाद्रि (pādri), Gujarati પાદરી (pādrī), Bengali পাদ্রি (padri) and Hindi पादरी (pādrī).
