Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀺𑀉𑀳𑀭 (piuhara), from Sanskrit पितृघर (pitṛghara, father's house), a compound of पितृ (pitṛ́) +‎ घर (ghara); or from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑁂𑀈𑀳𑀭 (peīhara), from Sanskrit पैतृकघर (paitṛkaghara, paternal house), a compound of पैतृक (paítṛka) +‎ घर (ghara). Cognate with Marwari पीहर (pīhar) and Gujarati પિયર (piyar).
