Etymology edit

Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘥𑘹𑘘𑘱 (bheṭi), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑁂𑀝𑁆𑀝𑁆- (*bheṭṭ-, to meet) (compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀪𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀦 n (bhiṭṭana), 𑀪𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀸 f (bhiṭṭā, present)). Cognate with Gujarati ભેટ (bheṭ), Hindi भेंट (bhẽṭ), Odia ଭେଟି (bheṭi), Bengali ভেট (bheṭ). Related to भेटणे (bheṭṇe).
