Etymology edit

Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘥𑘹𑘘𑘜𑘹 (bheṭaṇe), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑁂𑀝𑁆𑀝𑁆- (*bheṭṭ-, to meet) (compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀪𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀇 (bhiṭṭijjaï)). Cognate with Gujarati ભેટવું (bheṭvũ), Sindhi ڀيٽَڻُ / भेटणु (bheṭaṇu), Nepali भेट्नु (bheṭnu), Odia ଭେଟିବା (bheṭiba), Bengali ভেটা (bheṭa). Related to भेट (bheṭ).
