From Proto-Indo-European *meytH- (“to exchange; mutual, reciprocal”). Cognate with Latin mittō (“to send”), Gothic 𐌹𐌽𐌼𐌰𐌹𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (inmaidjan, “to change”). Latin mūtuus (“mutual”) and its English borrowing mutual may also be cognates.
