Etymology edit

Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *lóypos (adhesive, glue, something smeared), from the root *leyp- (to stick, adhere to, smear; fatty substance). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *lě̑pъ, Lithuanian lipaĩ (glue), Ancient Greek λίπος (lípos, fat).
