Borrowed from Classical Persian شطرنج (šatranj), from Arabic شطرنج (šaṭranj), from Classical Persian شترنگ (šatrang), from Middle Persian [script needed] (ctlng /⁠čatrang⁠/, chess), from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग (caturaṅga, four parts of an army: king, elephants, horses, foot soldiers).
