Inherited from Sanskrit हि (hi, emphatic particle) likely with some other particle such as एव (eva, “indeed”) or वै (vai, “indeed”). Compare the functionally equivalent Gujarati જ (ja), Marathi -च (-ċ) (whence Bombay Hindi -ईच (-īc)).
