Inherited from Prakrit *𑀏𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀮𑀓 (*ĕkkalaka), from 𑀏𑀓𑁆𑀓 (ĕkka) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮- (-la-) + -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit एक (eka, one). Cognate with Sylheti ꠄꠇꠟꠣ (exola), Assamese অকল (okol), Hindustani اکیلا / अकेला (akelā), Gujarati એકલું (ekalũ).
