Inherited from Sanskrit चित्रक (citraka, leopard), from चित्र (citra, variegated, spotted), referring to the spots on the fur of a leopard. Cognate with Hindi चीता (cītā), Gujarati ચિત્તો (citto), Marathi चित्ता (cittā). Doublet of চিত্র (citro) and চেহারা (cehara).
