Etymology

Vowel lowering (/i/ → /e/), through umlaut, triggered by the following open vowel (/a/) in চিনা (cina); ultimately from চিহ্নযতি (cihnayati, to stamp, mark). Cognate with Assamese চিনা (sina), Hindi चीन्हना (cīnhanā), Urdu چیننا (cīnnā). Doublet of চিহ্ন (cihno).
