Etymology edit

A variant of the rarer form চৌধরি (cōudhori), from Sanskrit चतुर्धरी (caturdharī, holder of four), a compound of चतुर् (catur, four) +‎ धर (dhara, holding, from धृ (dhṛ, to hold)) +‎ -ई (, doer), with "four" here representing the total of something (compare চারদিক (cardik, literally "four directions", but used to mean "every direction")).
