Etymology

edit

Syncopated and umlauted from দইয়াল (doiẏal), h-dropped from earlier দহিয়াল (dohiẏal, literally one who is smeared with yogurt), from Prakrit *𑀤𑀳𑀺𑀯𑀸𑀮 (*dahivāla, having yogurt), a compound of 𑀤𑀳𑀺 (dahi) +‎ 𑀯𑀸𑀮 (vāla, possessor), from Sanskrit दधि (dadhi, yogurt) and पाल (pāla, protector) respectively; the naming is due to the white marks on the black coat of the bird, reminiscent of a yogurt. Doublet of দইওয়ালা (doiōẇala).
