editEtymology
editSyncopated and umlauted from দইয়াল (doiẏal), h-dropped from earlier দহিয়াল (dohiẏal, literally “one who is smeared with yogurt”), from Prakrit *𑀤𑀳𑀺𑀯𑀸𑀮 (*dahivāla, “having yogurt”), a compound of 𑀤𑀳𑀺 (dahi) + 𑀯𑀸𑀮 (vāla, “possessor”), from Sanskrit दधि (dadhi, “yogurt”) and पाल (pāla, “protector”) respectively; the naming is due to the white marks on the black coat of the bird, reminiscent of a yogurt. Doublet of দইওয়ালা (doiōẇala).
