Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀧𑀳𑀺𑀮 (pahila), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀧𑁆𑀭𑀣𑀺𑀮𑁆𑀮 (prathilla), from 𑀧𑁆𑀭𑀣 (pratha) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-illa-), from Sanskrit प्रथम (prathama), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pratʰamás. Cognate with Assamese পহিলা (pohila), Bhojpuri 𑂣𑂯𑂱𑂪𑂰 (pahilā) and Hindi पहला (pahlā). Doublet of প্রথম (prothom).
