Learned borrowing from Sanskrit মণ্ডল (maṇḍala). Compare Hindi मंडल (maṇḍal), Gujarati મંડળ (maṇḍaḷ), Punjabi ਮੰਡਲ (maṇḍal), Tamil மண்டலம் (maṇṭalam). Doublet of মোড়ল (mōṛol, chief of a village).
