Etymology

edit

Inherited from Middle Bengali সিঢ়ি (śiṛhi), from Old Bengali সিঢি (siḍhi), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀲𑀺𑀟𑁆𑀠𑀺 (siḍḍhi), *𑀰𑀺𑀟𑁆𑀠𑀺 (*śiḍḍhi, ladder, stair), from Sanskrit *শ্রীঢি (śrīḍhi, resting or resorting place, sloped or inclined place, later, especially, "house; ladder"), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *śriẓḍʰHs, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćriždʰHs, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱli-s-dʰh₁s, a nominal formation from *ḱley- (to lean, incline, slope) and *dʰeh₁- (to do, place). Cognate to Odia ସିଢ଼ି (siṛhi), Hindi सीढ़ी (sīṛhī), Gujarati સીડી (sīḍī), Punjabi ਸੀੜ੍ਹੀ (sīṛhī), Marathi शिडी (śiḍī).
