Inherited from Gurjar Apabhramsa अहिरणि (ahiraṇī), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀳𑀺𑀕𑀭𑀡𑀻 (ahigaraṇī), from Sanskrit अधिकरणी (adhikaraṇī́). The anatomy sense is a semantic loan from English anvil. Cognate with Hindi अहेरन (aheran), Kachchi એણ (eṇa), Marathi अहिरण (ahiraṇ), ऐरण (airaṇ).
