From earlier ઓશીસું (ośīsũ) with influence from a Sanskrit borrowing, inherited from Prakrit 𑀉𑀲𑁆𑀲𑀻𑀲 (ussīsa), from Sanskrit उच्छीर्षक (ucchīrṣaka). Cognate with Hindi उसीसा (usīsā) and Marathi उशी (uśī).
