Etymology edit
Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑀮𑀲 (kalasa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit कलश (kalaśa), from Dravidian. Cognate with Bengali কলস (koloś), Hindi कलसा (kalsā), Marwari कलस्यो (kalasyo), Nepali कलस (kalas), Marathi कळस (kaḷas).
etymological note
Alternatively, if not from Dravidian, the origin is unknown. Similar words are found in other languages, but the interrelationship of these terms is uncertain. See Old Armenian կարաս (karas, “water-jar”) for possible connections.
