Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀟 (kakkaḍa), from Sanskrit कर्कट (karkaṭa, crab), with the word structure and semantic domain suggested borrowing from a substrate language; compare Santali ᱠᱟᱴᱠᱚᱢ (kaṭkôm, crab), a Munda language.[1] Cognate with Assamese কেঁকোৰা (kẽküra), Bengali কাঁকড়া (kãkoṛa), Hindi केकड़ा (kekṛā), Kamta কাঁকৰা (kãkora), Marathi खेकडा (khekḍā), and Odia କାଂକଡ଼ା (kāṅkaṛā), କାକାଡ଼ା (kākāṛā),
