কাঁকড়া

Etymology

edit

Inherited from Old Bengali কাংকডা (kāṃkaḍā), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀓𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀟 (kakkaḍa) with nasalization, from Sanskrit कर्कट (karkaṭa, crab). Cognate with Kamta কাঁকৰা (kãkora), Assamese কেঁকোৰা (kẽküra), Sylheti ꠇꠣꠇꠠꠣ (xaxoṛa), Odia କାଂକଡ଼ା (kāṅkaṛā), କାକାଡ଼ା (kākāṛā), Hindi केकड़ा (kekṛā). Similar nasalization to the first syllable when the last syllable is "ড়া" (formerly "ডা") occurs in পিঁপড়া (pĩpṛa, ant) and coordinate terms in other Eastern Indo-Aryan languages, probably due to non-Aryan local transformation. Doublet of কর্কট (korkoṭ), a tatsama.
