Inherited from Prakrit 𑀘𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀞 (ciṭṭha) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓- (-ika-), from Sanskrit *चिष्ट (ciṣṭa, message), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ćiṣṭás, possibly from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čištás, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷis-tós, from *kʷeys- (to observe).[1] Cognate with Assamese চিঠি (sithi), Bengali চিঠি (ciṭhi), Hindustani چٹھی / चिट्ठी (ciṭṭhī), Marathi चिठ्ठी (ciṭhṭhī), Nepali चिठी (ciṭhī), Rajasthani चिट्ठी (ciṭṭhī), and Sindhi چِٺي / चिठी (ciṭhī).
