Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀯𑀕𑁆𑀖 (vaggha), from Sanskrit व्याघ्र (vyāghra), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *vyāgʰrás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wy(H)āgʰrás. Doublet of વ્યાઘ્ર (vyāghra). Cognate with Bengali বাঘ (bagh), Hindustani باگھ (bāgh) / बाघ (bāgh), Marathi वाघ (vāgh), Punjabi باگھ / ਬਾਘ (bāgh).
