Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *kōẓi, with a proposed intermediate reconstruction of *kōṯ-u in South Central Dravidian/South Dravidian II. Cognate with Kannada ಕೋಳಿ (kōḷi), Tamil கோழி (kōḻi), Tulu ಕೋಳಿ (kōḷi), Malayalam കോഴി (kōḻi).
