From Middle Chinese (MC khaek), possibly onomatopoeic. Cognate with Northern Thai ᨡᩣ᩠ᨠ, Lao ຂາກ (khāk) or ຄາກ (khāk), ᦃᦱᧅ (ẋaak), Zhuang gak or gag, Zuojiang Zhuang hak.
