From Pali bhikkhu (beggar), referring to a priest that begs for alms; perhaps via Old Khmer bhikkhu (Buddhist monk). Cognate with Modern Khmer ភិក្ខុ (phɨkkhoʼ), Burmese ဘိက္ခု (bhikhku.).
