From ลอย (lɔɔi, to raise; to lift) +‎ นวล (nuuan, yellowish white, referring to a face on which a traditional yellowish-white face powder, called แป้งนวล (bpɛ̂ɛng-nuuan), has been applied); originated from an act of keeping one's chin up whilst walking.
