From ศรี (sǐi, “woman”) +‎ สะ (sà, archaic form of สระ (sà, “to wash”)) +‎ เกษ (gèet, archaic form of เกศ (gèet, “hair”)); literally "hair-washing woman"; after a woman in folklore; given to the city by Rama I in 2325 BE (1782/83 CE).
