From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰuəᴬ (husband), from Middle Chinese (MC pju). Cognate with Thai ผัว (pǔua), Northern Thai ᨹ᩠ᩅᩫ, Khün ᨹ᩠ᩅᩫ, ᦷᦕ (ṗho), Shan ၽူဝ် (phǒ).
