Inherited from Old Burmese ခ္လိယ်း (hkliy), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *kləy, from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kləj.[1] Cognate with Tibetan ལྕི་བ (lci ba) and Chinese . Compare ၶီႈ (khīi), ขี้ (kîi).
