Borrowed from Pali gaṅgā or Sanskrit गङ्गा (gaṅgā, literally one who goes swiftly; one who flows rapidly), from the verbal root गम् (gam, to go), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷem- (to come) (whence Latin veniō, Ancient Greek βαίνω (baínō), and English come).. Cognate with Khmer គង្គ (kŭəngkĕəʼ), គង្គា (kŭəngkiə); Lao ຄົງຄາ (khong khā), ກັງກາ (kang kā); Thai คงคา (kong-kaa).
