Etymology

edit

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s/p-wa (tooth), whence also သွား (swa:, tooth) (STEDT ə-swâ "edge of cutting instrument").

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Unclear if the "spicy" meaning is a semantic extension of the "edge" meaning - STEDT is agnostic on this.”
