Etymology

edit

From a component နံ (nam) of unclear interpretation and origin (some suggest "planet") + a component နက် (nak) from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ʔ-nakᴸ ~ m-nak (early morning), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-na(k/p) (idem), whence also Jingpho mənàp (idem) (STEDT). Said Sino-Tibetan root may be related to *s-nak (black) (whence နက် (nak, black, deep, dense)), as the early morning is often dark.
