From Proto-Southwestern Tai *mɯːᴬ⁴ (hand), from Proto-Tai *mwɯːᴬ (hand). Cognate with Thai มือ (mʉʉ), Northern Thai ᨾᩨ, Lao ມື (mư̄), ᦙᦹ (mue), Tai Dam ꪣꪳ, Tai Dón ꪝꪳ, Aiton မိုဝ် (müw), Ahom 𑜉𑜢𑜤𑜈𑜫 (müw), Zhuang mwz, Saek มื๊อ, Tày mừ. Compare Sui myal (hand), Proto-Be *məːᴬ², Proto-Hlai *C-mɯː (hand) (whence mɯɰ¹~mɯɰ⁴ across the different lects), Proto-Austronesian *qalima (hand).
