Etymology edit

From Proto-Mon-Khmer *pril ~ *priəl (hail). Cognate with Bahnar prĕl (ice), Pacoh pareal, Pnar phria, Parauk pre:, Santali ᱟᱨᱮᱞ (arel).

This Austroasiatic term has two variants, one with -r-l (represented by Khmer and the likes) and one with -l-r (represented by Khmu [Cuang] pliər, Mon ပၠဳ, Proto-Vietic *p-lɛːr). It is likely that the *prVl form is more original and the *plVr form was derived from metathesis.
