From Proto-Tai *C̥.doːjᴬ (mountain). Cognate with Thai ดอย (dɔɔi), Lao ດອຍ (dǭi), Northern Thai ᨯᩬ᩠ᨿ, Khün ᨯᩭ, ᦡᦾ (ḋoay), Shan လွႆ (lǎui), Ahom 𑜓𑜨𑜩 (doy) or 𑜓𑜨𑜩𑜐𑜫 (doyñ), Zhuang ndoi.
