Etymology edit

From ἆθλος (âthlos, contest, struggle) or ἆθλον (âthlon, prize, contest) +‎ -έω (-éō, verbal suffix). In the Attic form ᾱ̓θλῶ (āthlô), ᾰε (ae) is contracted to (ā).
