Ancient Greek edit

Etymology edit

Unknown. The explanation as a univerbation of ἀκταίνω (aktaínō, to keep erect) and ἐρείδω (ereídō, to prop, support) seems most improbable.

Pronunciation edit

  1. staff, stick
  2. bar of wood supporting a chariot pole
