According to Beekes, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ- (to straighten, right oneself). Cognates include Proto-Germanic *rōkijaną (to take care of), Latin regō (to rule, govern) (Ancient Greek ὀρέγω (orégō, to reach, stretch out).
