editEtymology
editBorrowed Pre-Greek word, as is shown by the variants. Furnée further compares σφονδύλιον (sphondúlion), which would show pre-nasalization. A speculative attempt by Biraud, who finds the same suffix in στυφελός (stuphelós), ζάφελος (záphelos) and ῥάκελος (rhákelos).
