Ancient Greek edit

Etymology edit

A parallel formation to ἥμῐσυς (hḗmisus, half, adjective). Usually seen as reflecting Proto-Indo-European *sēmi-tw-om, a thematisation of the tu-stem ἥμισυς (hḗmisus),[1] there is however contradictory evidence for -σσ- (-ss-) being the regular Doric outcome of medial *-tw-.[2] Compare Albanian gjysmë.

Noun edit

ἥμῐσσον (hḗmissonn (genitive ἡμῐ́σσοιο); second declension (Doric)

  1. half
Synonyms: ἡμίσεια f (hēmíseia), ἥμισυ n (hḗmisu)
