Etymology edit

Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (to see), the same root of εἶδος (eîdos, form, image) and ἰδέα (idéa, look, appearance). For the formation, compare ἱκανός (hikanós) and πιθανός (pithanós).
