editCorruption of ϫⲉⲙⲫⲉϩ (čempheh, “apple”) where ϫⲉⲙ- was discarded possibly akin to μηλοπέπων (mēlopépōn), a combination of μῆλον (mêlon, “apple”) and πέπων (pépōn, “ripe”), which gave rise to Byzantine Greek πεπόνιον (pepónion) and Greek πεπόνι (pepóni, “melon”).
