Etymology

From English overshoot. The “sudden increase” sense is Wasei eigo (和製英語; pseudo-anglicism).

     「今(こん)後(ご)、感(かん)染(せん)源(げん)が分(わ)からない患(かん)者(じゃ)が継(けい)続(ぞく)的(てき)に増(ぞう)加(か)し全(ぜん)国(こく)に拡(かく)大(だい)すれば、どこかの地(ち)域(いき)を発(ほっ)端(たん)として爆(ばく)発(はつ)的(てき)な感(かん)染(せん)拡(かく)大(だい)（オーバーシュート）を伴(ともな)う大(だい)規(き)模(ぼ)流(りゅう)行(こう)につながりかねない」とする新(あら)たな提(てい)言(げん)をまとめた。

     “Kongo, kansengen ga wakaranai kanja ga keizokuteki ni zōka shi zenkoku ni kakudai sureba, doko ka no chiiki o hottan toshite bakuhatsuteki na kansen kakudai (ōbāshūto) o tomonau daikibo ryūkō ni tsunagari kanenai” to suru arata na teigen o matometa.

     “Hereafter, without understanding the sources of the infection, if patients continue to spread throughout the country we may see an explosive increase (overshoot) in any region, with the possibility of large-scale prevalence,” the new proposal concludes.

     In Tokyo concern is rising over an eruption in infection. In the Tokyo metropolis on the 25th more than 40 new cases have been confirmed.

     Funai de wa sanjūichi-nichi, gohyakukyūjūkyū-nin no shinki kansen o kakunin. Kaigi de wa Ōsaka shinai no jū ~ sanjū-dai de kansen ga kyūzō shi, kongo ōbāshūto (bakuhatsuteki kanja kyūzō) no kenen ga aru to mo hōkoku sareta.

     599 new infections were confirmed in the prefecture on the 31st. At the meeting it was reported that the number of infections increased especially rapidly in the city of Osaka among people in their teens through thirties, leading to fear of an explosive increase in the future.
