From (sān, “three”) + (, “seven”), because of the plant's tendency to grow three petioles with seven leaflets each. It is also traditionally grown in 3 parts sunlight and 7 parts shade, and harvested 3 to 7 years after maturity, but these are likely traditions based on the name (Fruehauf, 2014).
