     彼(かれ)は、なぜということもなしに、自分(じぶん)も鈴(すず)を鳴(な)らしてみたい気(き)になり、石燈籠(いしどうろう)の近(ちか)くから参道(さんどう)の石畳(いしだたみ)をふんで、拝殿(はいでん)のまえに進(すす)んだ。

     Kare wa, naze to iu koto mo nashi ni, jibun mo suzu o narashite mitai ki ni nari, ishidōrō no chikaku kara sandō no ishidatami o funde, haiden no mae ni susunda.

     For no particular reason, he felt the urge to ring the bells himself, so he proceeded from the vicinity of a stone lantern toward the front of the hall of worship, treading the cobblestones on the path to the shrine.
