Etymology

From the 13th-century Buddhist text Wudeng Huiyuan (五燈會元, Compendium of Five Lamps). Literally “oral stele”, as steles are a medium for commemorative text relating to the deceased person. Compare 有口皆碑 (yǒukǒujiēbēi).
